Romance in Fields of Mistria 1.0 now runs all the way from dating to marriage and children. The key progression is: raise a romanceable NPC to 8 Hearts, choose the Dating route during their 8-Heart event, reach 10 Hearts, complete their proposal event, craft an Engagement Ring, propose, then plan your wedding.

NPC Studio added the 10-Heart cap, proposal events, wedding events, marriage, children, engagement dialogue, post-marriage routines, and family events in the 1.0 update.
Step 1: Choose a romanceable character
Fields of Mistria has 12 marriage candidates in the full game: Adeline, Balor, Caldarus, Celine, Eiland, Hayden, Juniper, March, Reina, Ryis, Seridia, and Valen. Caldarus and Seridia are the two secret candidates that older Early Access guides often left unnamed.
There is no gender restriction on eligible partners. You can pursue any romanceable NPC regardless of your player character's gender.

Step 2: Reach 8 Hearts and choose Dating
The important branching point arrives in the character's 8-Heart event. The Third Major Update introduced 8-Heart events and lets you choose whether to continue as Best Friends or Dating.
You can date multiple NPCs at the same time. That is useful if you want to see several romance routes before deciding whom to marry. However, you can ultimately marry only one character.
If you are trying to trigger a specific relationship scene, check the Heart Events Guide rather than assuming hearts alone are enough; individual events can have their own progression or location context.
Step 3: Raise your partner to 10 Hearts
Version 1.0 raises the NPC relationship cap to 10 Hearts. Keep talking to your partner, giving useful gifts, and taking them on dates. NPC Studio's 1.0 patch notes specifically say that taking an NPC on a date now increases their heart level more.
For efficient daily friendship, use the Gifts Guide and Universal Likes Guide instead of spending rare materials at random. Character-specific routes are also available for March and Adeline.
At 10 Hearts, romanceable NPCs have Proposal Events. These are more than a final friendship scene: they connect directly to the engagement system and can award NPC-specific special items.
One useful 1.0 detail is that you do not have to propose to the first character whose 10-Heart event you see. NPC Studio says you can view all of the proposal events and collect their special items before choosing a spouse.
Step 4: Get and craft the Engagement Ring
After reaching 10 Hearts with an NPC you're dating, Elsie delivers the Engagement Ring recipe the following morning. Read the recipe scroll to unlock it, then craft the Engagement Ring at a Forge.
The ring is the key item for moving from dating into engagement. If you have not reached 10 Hearts with a dating partner, the recipe is not supposed to arrive yet.

Step 5: Use the ring and propose
The Engagement Ring can retrigger eligible 10-Heart events. This gives you room to see the proposal content without immediately locking in a marriage.
When you decide to propose and become engaged, the game moves into the wedding phase. If you were dating several NPCs, 1.0 includes settings related to how those other relationships change after engagement. By default, other dating relationships can change to Best Friends; the gameplay settings exposed through the engagement tutorial include options affecting that behavior.
So if you are dating multiple people and care about preserving those statuses, read the engagement tutorial before confirming the proposal.
Step 6: Plan the wedding
Your fiance discusses wedding choices with you in the days leading up to the ceremony. NPC Studio specifically lists customizable details including:
- flower color;
- cake flavor;
- the meal served at the reception.
Patch v1.0.3 also adds an important calendar restriction: Spring 14, Fall 7, and Winter 7 are festival setup days and can no longer be selected as wedding dates. If you are choosing a ceremony date, avoid relying on an older launch-day guide that predates this fix. The Calendar Guide is useful when you want to plan around festivals and birthdays.

Step 7: Marriage and post-marriage life
Marriage is not the end of the relationship system. Version 1.0 adds post-marriage dialogue and NPC routines, and you can interact with an NPC you are dating, engaged to, or married to in order to kiss them.
The full release also adds children as an optional family feature. In the weeks after marriage, a Mystical Feather becomes available through a cutscene. It can trigger a family-planning discussion if you want to have a child; you are not required to use that route.

Can you date multiple characters?
Yes. The Third Major Update explicitly introduced the ability to date multiple NPCs simultaneously. The limitation is at marriage: you ultimately choose one spouse.
Because 1.0 lets you retrigger 10-Heart proposal events with the Engagement Ring until you actually propose, completion-focused players can see multiple romance routes and collect the associated special items before committing.
Are Caldarus and Seridia romanceable?
Yes. In the current 1.0 game, Caldarus and Seridia are the two secret romance candidates. Older pages that describe two unnamed silhouettes are reflecting pre-1.0 information. Romance tips for a new save
- Pick one or more candidates whose events you actually want to see instead of optimizing only around gifts.
- Keep convenient liked or loved gifts available, but do not ignore conversations, festivals, and dates.
- At 8 Hearts, choose Dating for any character whose romance route you want to continue.
- Do not rush your first 10-Heart proposal into marriage if you want to see the other proposal events first.
- Once Elsie sends the Engagement Ring recipe, craft it at a Forge and decide when you are ready to commit.
- Check your calendar before choosing a wedding day; v1.0.3 blocks the festival setup dates Spring 14, Fall 7, and Winter 7.
